So here we are.
I’m currently holed up, off work, awaiting some tests, it’s fucking raining and we’re all going to die from a shit beer disease, if the climate doesn’t get us first.
But enough with the pleasantries, let’s all attempt to, at least fake a smile, as I have a look at stuff coming up/going on within the walls or what’s left of them and if we’re still alive.

DUNGAREES BY ENNIO, THE LITTLE BROTHER:
More lush musical goodness from ETLB, the team at Mai 68 Records and a fantastic video from Mo Clouting.
I’m really enjoying the evolution of Ennio’s sound.
With it’s cracking lyrical wordplay and melancholic beauty, the track actually sounds painted as opposed to produced and is to be admired as a piece of art. We were also quite dazzled with his technical vocal ability.
To only listen to the first 30 seconds of this song, is to do the track a disservice.
It’s official release is the 3rd of April and you can buy the vinyl, as part of a launch party bundle here.
ONLY HUMAN #4 ON 17TH OF MAY:
The 4th OH event is taking place in The Kitchen at Storyhouse.
Here is the lineup for the new Sunday slot.
No electronic night in Chester would be complete without the presence of Mr Dave Julian.
Dave’s brooding synthesisers ooze rich shadowy melodies and cool twilight sequences. The sound is pure, the vision is dark; this is Machine Music for the mind and soul.
Sword Swinging Robot was born of a deep love of electronic dance music. Based in beautiful North Wales, SSR’s music is a dark fusion of electronic beats, cinematic soundscapes, and a healthy dose of Acid 303!
Informed by post punk, synth pop and Factory Records; this melodic machine music is a brew of live drum machines and groove boxes.
Think extended 12” mixes for the feet and mind.
Platform Zero’s Storyhouse debut is a real treat for all electronic music fans. He excels in beautifully crafted chord progressions, melodic arpeggios and cool beats.
A very modern take on synth pop; as romantic as it is danceable. Essential.
Ross’s music is a melting pot of many influences. Utilising drum machines and groove boxes, Ross has found the sweet spot between Detroit/European techno and electro.
With Ross, “being a fan of machines”, you can also expect prominent bass, breaks and bleeps.
Following phenomenal sets at our first two events and a Cloudspotting festival appearance on the horizon; Etchasketch is back!
He’ll be joining the dots between classic house and techno using a modular synth set up that embraces the spontaneous.
Never afraid to improvise, every performance is unique. This is a live experience not to be missed.
citizenFLY is a fresh recruit to electronic music production and has hit the ground running following 2 fantastic performances at Modulate and Nexus.
For his Storyhouse debut cF will bring his unique mix of synth pop inspired EDM.
Using samples, crafted sequences and expansive synth pads; citizenFLY is an absolute must listen.
STEPPING TIGER PRESENTS NABIHAH LQBAL ON 12TH APRIL:
Many musicians like to speak of versatility, but Nabihah Iqbal has better grounds than most. She boasts an MPhil (focused on African history) from Cambridge, has worked in human rights law and has a black belt in Karate. Formerly known as Throwing Shade, she has ditched that moniker to embrace the name she was born with.
She released her debut album ‘Weighing of the Heart’ in December 2017 and has since garnered huge critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Dazed, The Observer, Q Magazine, BBC Radio 1 and 6Music.
Support on the night comes from Ganzo [Squish Camdem] as well as the ST residents.
A STRONG SHOWING AT FOCUS WALES PLUS OTHER EXPORTS:
Local acts or acts to the Chester local scene at this year’s FOCUS WALES include Chupa Cabra, David Burton, DEH-YEY, Ennio the Little brother, Everything Is Now, and Mondegreen with plenty more on the bill. I’ll be previewing and chatting to the local artists prior to the big event over the next couple of months.
As well as a successful FW haul, there are plenty of Chester artists playing live/putting on events in other cities and areas of the country.
The before mentioned Mai 68 Records are hosting a label showcase at the legendary venue The Social in London on the 16th of April.
Chester/Frodsham synth duo The Last Clouds recently headlined their first show at Retro in Manchester and got a Louder Than War review in the process.
Chester guitarist Vince Cory continues to cross the country with his ridiculously good Sonic Trip Project band and they’re looking very much a staple of the summer’s nationwide psyche festival scene.
Sam Orr and the mighty 1968 have been EVERYWHERE including the states but not Chester for a while, much to my personal annoyance.
NEW RELEASE FROM SHEM SHARPLES INCOMING:
SL favourite Shem Sharples is releasing his new album at the end of May. Entitled ‘Strange Sounds From The Wreckage’ and he’s releasing a series of singles from it on streaming services every few weeks, leading up to release day.
DONNER MEAT ASSASSINS FEATURING AMOS:
The busiest man in local hip hop teams up with artist/producer PhoreCite on the release Return Of Arcadius Kebabus-The Kebabus Saga Vol.1.
Absolute class from our adopted Cestrian:
DIRTY SOUND MAGNET RETURN TO CHESTER ON THE 2ND MAY:
Dirty Sound Magnet are a psychedelic rock power trio from Fribourg, Switzerland.
Expect shamanic psychedelia and dirty rock n’ roll, a Dirty Sound Magnet show represents an amazing live experience.
The Chester leg of their tour is the last show in the UK before heading off to Poland.
You really, really need to see these guys while you have the chance.
This is the fb event page with all the details you need and be sure to check out their latest album ‘Transgenic’ which was released last autumn.
